The warehouse sale known as ART HK 11 is back for its fourth year with even more stuff from even more galleries from 38 countries. While there will undoubtedly be an awful lot of dross, I’m sure there will be some interesting works on display too. A new feature is ASIA ONE where galleries will showcase a solo artist from Asia. There will of course be loads of marked down stuff from the Young British Artists, who really aren’t young or interesting anymore (and yes I mean you, Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst), but Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor will also be represented. Head on down and rub shoulders with Asia’s great art connoisseurs who have been overheard asking for “a red painting about 2 metres wide and costing about $1.5 mil”.

We’ve had a great year in music in HK so far, and it looks like it’s set to continue with the arrival of The Drums on the 26th May. If you haven’t heard of them, then really, where have you been? They’re only New York’s coolest band. While they started off trying to sound like mid-80s dirge-churners The Wake, they soon realised that they, and their fans, much preferred the bright perfection of the 50s. Sounding like a mixture of Joy Division and the Beach Boys, these 20-somethings are producing perfect pop with a lovely twisted edge – listen to them singing ‘you’re my best friend, but then you died and I don’t know how I’ll survive’ against the bright sunny sound of tambourines and you’ll get what I mean.

As part of IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia) this year, there will be a screening of Courage Unfolds, a documentary highlighting the issues faced by LGBT people in Asia. It also encourages the use of the Yogyakarta Principles, the application of international human rights law to sexual orientation and gender identity. After the screening, there will be a discussion panel on strategies of the LGBT rights movement in Hong Kong with a number of prominent figures from the LGBT community.

Launched in 2004 by French academic Louis-Georges Tin, this Rally has become a global event, as we fight for a world without discrimination, where every human being is entitled to the same basic human rights. In Hong Kong, we still aren’t recognized and are classified as second class citizens without the right to marry, without the right to adopt children, and without the right to public housing. Stand up to the government and show them that we not only demand our rights, we are willing to fight for them.
