The Peak Lookout

Whenever I have guests visiting from abroad, the peak is always one of the destinations to take them. The view of Hong Kong, whether it’s day or night, is always so stunning and I always stop by the Peak Lookout whether its for food or just for a drink. So when I was told that for this issue, we will be reviewing the Peak Lookout I felt that I already had enough knowledge of the restaurant to give a thorough review.

The Peak Lookout is a Hong Kong trademark. The original building “…was an open-sided shelter for sedan chairs and the first enclosures between the pillars [were] installed in about 1947”. The ambience of the place has “been carefully chosen to reflect the mood of a bygone age while remaining light and modern.”
To help visitors get an idea of what the peak used to look and be like there are numerous photographs and illustrations adorning the walls.

The Peak Lookout has an international menu serving Japanese, Indian, Italian, Thai and American to name but a few.

With the many choices to choose from, we started the appetizer with an Italian Buffalo Mozzarella and Tomato Salad with Basil Dressing. For $148, the portion was big and the mozzarella was not too heavy making for a nice start to the meal.

We followed the salad with Blue Fin Tuna Tartare. The tartare was served with wasabi mayonnaise, pickled cucumber and sesame croutons. I’ve always enjoyed tartares, but for me the fish wasn’t diced as finely as I’m used to although my dinner partner preferred this because he felt that it gave you something more to chew on. The sesame croutons were a pleasant addition to the dish and the wasabi mayonnaise gave it that extra kick to each bite.

For our main course we chose the 10oz Grain Fed Sirloin Steak ($318). I’ve always loved grain fed steaks, and this steak didn’t disappoint. The steak was brought to us as requested, medium rare, and the portion was just the right size to leave room for more tasting. The only criticism I would give is that although stated on the menu as being charcoal grilled, this didn’t come through in the flavour.

After trying their European selection, they brought us my all time favourite dish at the Peak Lookout, the Tandoori Seabass, the Peak Lookout serves exquisite Indian cuisine. Served with garlic naan, this dish was really the highlight of the meal. The fish was quite moist, not overdone, and the seasoning in the curry didn’t overpower the freshness of the fish with fresh coriander being a pleasant aromatic addition.

I wish I had had room to try other cuisines but I am glad that we ended the whole experience with an Indian dish because it left me sated. The best thing about this restaurant is that even after you finish eating your meal, you are bound to stick around longer to enjoy the stunning views and relaxing décor and ambience.

Their wine selection is also international, with choices from Italy, France and even China. So the next time you stop by the peak, make sure you try out the Peak Lookout and enjoy the whole peak experience. Every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday the Peak Lookout offers a champagne brunch with unlimited champagne for just $528. Or if you prefer to steer clear of a bubbly brunch, they offer free flow juices and soft drinks too at the relatively cheaper price of $398.
