For a band that created such a buzz back in 2004 with their debut release it’s actually hard to remember why when listening to their third album Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. There’s nothing here with any excitement – the melodies are limp, the lyrics are bland; it all feels like a damp wash cloth. Originally what made the band famous was a real swagger that pumped vigour into their brand of rock ‘n roll, whereas here they sound like a tired covers band. On opening track Ulysses Alex Kapranos sings “I’m bored, I’m bored – let’s get high, let’s get high!” and to be honest that’s the effect this CD has on me; after not long at all I’m bored and just need to put something else in my CD player. I certainly wouldn’t waste good grass on this supermarket discount bin record. Do yourselves a favour, ignore this album and if you haven’t heard it before buy the band’s first effort, the self-titled Franz Ferdinand. In comparison it’s really rather good.
