For 2009, I’ll have 12 articles with tips for men’s skincare, each focussing on a different topic in a particular setting. To begin this skincare series, we’ll start with the job interview. Usually the beginning of the year is the time for job hunting. But this year many of you would rather hold on your current job than even think about giving it up. Indeed, many have lost their jobs due to the bad economic situation; nonetheless, don’t let it get you down. The grass may be greener on the other side.

Many men like to be overdressed and have a trendy, over polished hairstyle when going to an interview. Though gay men tend to have more options in their wardrobe, I suggest you dress in an appropriate and subtle manner for the interview. Some useful tips: a perfectly tailored suit, clean and tidy hair and most importantly a clean shave.

I think all of you have grasped the skills of facial cleansing so now I’ll elaborate more on shaving techniques. First of all, soften the facial hair with warm water or simply moisten the shaving area by applying an adequate amount of shaving cream while giving yourself a good facial massage. Start by shaving in the direction of the hair growth and be careful not to cut yourself. If you think this is the end of the shaving process you’re wrong. If you don’t put moisturizer on afterwards, it will usually result in dehydrated skin or even razor burn, especially in the cool, dry winter. Some like to apply after-shave for that refreshing feeling (since it contains alcohol) and that lasting “scent of a man”. Actually, I strongly recommended you first apply a thin layer of moisturizer since the protective and aqua moist layer has been scraped off the epidermis during shaving.

Some only focus on their face without taking other important features into consideration. Colourfully dyed hair or a stylish hairstyle are big “no-no’s” for the interview. It’s also not suggested to use glitter hair spray or gel. Dry, cracked and bleeding lips will also drive your potential employer away. Lip balm will save you from this disastrous situation. And a pair of soft, smooth hands with clean cut nails are always welcomed by potential employers; a bottle of hand cream costs just a few dollars but will work miracles on your hands, believe it or not.

Last but not the least, don’t spray on too much perfume, cologne or deodorant before your interview as the excessive smell may be overpowering or make someone sick, particularly in an office environment. Best of luck!
