The Dance is like a breath of fresh air in a market filled with cut-up bleepy and frequently irritating electro. This is not a retro album, it’s thoroughly up to date, though it’s also classically good Faithless music, the sort that no-one’s making any more. The name of the album, The Dance, isn’t so much a reference to hands in the air clubbing, it’s a metaphoric reference to the dance that Faithless have done around the various musical styles referenced throughout, and the dance that we the listener get to take amongst many of these lovely tracks. Those moments are at their best mid-album in Flyin Hi, again with a title that suggests euphoric dance but a song that is actually the loveliest chill-out track released in ages. The set includes many fine moments, both of the ecstatic dance type and more out there sort such as Feel Me and Tweak Your Nipple. Collaborations with Dido (North Star) and Dougy Mandagi (Comin Around) also work admirably. Ignore the British music press, The Dance is great.
