Let’s get one thing clear here; many people will not like this monster of a record. The massive progressive edges and spiky, cut-up industrial barbs of the music, more shards of technology than classic musical notes, combined with M.I.A’s aggressive anti-establishment attitude is music for the discerning, more intellectual type of listener as well as the kid who loves edged-out progressive beats. Of course, it’s really quite brilliant. It’s a huge but possibly natural progression from the world music of last album Kala. The New York Times Magazine accused M.I.A recently of being pretentious and hypocritical and plenty won’t have time for this thrilling mechanical landscape; for many it’ll be an irritation, but in 2010 /\/\ /\ Y /\ is the only album so far to have redefined the musical boundaries. Brilliant, but sample before buying. For the faithful there are gems throughout.
