Word: Dai Man

UK 5-piece Mama’s Gun are an infectious pop band with a talent for swinging pop/soul and jazz-tinged funk. Fronted by the gifted Andy Platts, one time HK resident, who sings with a compelling nod towards Stevie Wonder territory, this is a record that you think, “how come I haven’t always had this CD?” Although not every track is a knock out, the 17 track set is all polished soul-pop groove which should indicate a bright future for the band if they continue to develop on their obvious strengths. They are certainly very groovy which comes from their obvious love of the funkier side of the musical tree, which references very obviously the funk of the 70s. Mama’s Gun is the real deal and Platts’ voice, capable of great range, is a fine instrument. Standouts are many and include the gorgeous Let’s Find A Way which is a brilliant homage to great soul bands such as The Temptations. Psycho Territory gets dirty and brings out a late 60s Vietnam War era funk. As a debut album this is a slam dunk, let’s hope they continue to hone their craft as they could prove to be a big hit in this decade.
