Marina and the Diamonds – The Family Jewels Rate: 60/100

Recent runner-up in the BBC’s Sound Of 2010 critics poll, half Greek, half Welsh Marina Diamands delivers another quirky pop offering of the sort we’ve started to expect out of the UK these days. For quirky femme-pop is always going to be more appealing than sugary love songs and boy bands, though she is more Mika than Robyn. The Family Jewels is quite a heady mix of different styles and even though the album tends to drift all over the place, this is a debut album after all so it’s quite appropriate that the joy of being signed to a major label should shine through from Ms Diamands, even though she can seem just slightly overbearing. For all the bubblegum and catchy choruses there’s a lot more in this girl’s bag of tricks than simple pop hooks. Lyrically she entertains with lines such as “I fall asleep when they speak of all the calories they eat.” in the song Girls in which she challenges girly stereotypes, although many of the songs here are simply more over the top than intriguing.
