Mika the unlikely Lebanese lad has just proven beyond doubt that he is quite the original talent. The Boy Who Knew Too Much manages to surpass his debut album, 2007’s Life in Cartoon Motion, with a collection of daring pop tunes that ensures his reputation as a bona fide star. Campy and kitsch he is not going to enamour everyone, but those who enjoy more theatrical and oddball charms are likely to be delighted by the music of this shamelessly fun drama queen. If anyone has earned the right to assume the great Freddy Mercury’s mantle for over the top glam then surely it’s Mika, for in a world where our pop stars are now chosen by couch potatoes and committees, Mika is indeed a rare gem, albeit one with a falsetto voice. Album highlight Toy Boy is the tale of a wind-up doll spurned by the boy who owns him after objections from his homophobic mother and is pure Noel Coward! As a lyricist Mika’s quite brilliant. The quirky new singer of 2007 has emerged in 2009 as a jubilant vaudeville-esque showstopper.
